What is involved in having a tooth extraction performed?

That depends in part on the location of the tooth and how badly it's damaged. Simple extractions are relatively straightforward, using grasping tools designed to remove teeth without significant trauma to surrounding tissues. Extractions involving difficult-to-reach teeth such as wisdom teeth or teeth that have become impacted (coming in sideways or “stuck” under other teeth) require incisions in the gum tissue to access them and remove them.

How can I tell if my wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Not all wisdom teeth require extraction. Most are removed when they have decay, are impacted, cause significant crowding issues or are difficult to clean and care for. Dr. Refoa will be able to tell from your exam if your wisdom teeth should be removed.

Will I have a lot of pain during or after my extraction?

Thanks to advances in pain management techniques and technology, the discomfort of extractions has decreased significantly in recent years. Dr. Refoa uses local anesthetics, nitrous oxide (“laughing” gas) and conscious sedation techniques to help patients relax and reduce or eliminate discomfort during procedures, as well as pain relievers and other methods to ensure recovery is as pain-free as possible.

What will recovery be like?

You might experience some discomfort and swelling that can be managed with pain relievers and application of ice to your cheek. You'll need to avoid using straws and eating very hot foods during the initial stages of healing to ensure the clot remains in place and keep bleeding to a minimum. You'll also be given complete instructions on how to care for the area during healing, including how to keep the area clean. If you've had sedation, you'll be groggy afterward. Plan on spending the rest of the day resting.
