Invisalign Q&A

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is an orthodontic system that relies on a series of custom-fit aligners (clear plastic trays) to move teeth into ideal alignment over time. Invisalign® offers systems designed for adults and for teens whose adult teeth may not have fully emerged.

What are the benefits of Invisalign® over traditional metal braces?

One of the primary advantages of Invisalign® is that the clear plastic trays are nearly invisible while they're being worn, so there's no embarrassment or stigma attached to wearing them. They can also be easily removed, which means there are no dietary restrictions and brushing and flossing are much easier. They can even be removed for social events or picture-taking and, of course, for regular dental checkups during treatment. Plus, the smooth design avoids the pain and discomfort associated with metal braces and wires that can poke into your lips and gums. And finally, because they're custom-fit to each person's mouth, treatment duration is often shorter than with traditional metal braces.

What happens during treatment with the Invisalign® alignment system?

Once Dr. Refoa determines you're a good candidate for Invisalign®, an impression or mold will be made of your teeth and sent to a special lab. A computer will scan the impression and develop a series of virtual models that show how your teeth will need to move over time to come into alignment. Those virtual models will be used to create your customized series of aligners. Once the aligners have been created, you'll need to wear them in sequence, replacing aligners about once every two weeks to keep teeth moving in the proper directions for ideal alignment. Most patients complete treatment in 18 months or less.
